So you want to make your own website, huh? Well, it takes a lot of work, a little money, and you can use these tools along the way.
I'm using macOS 26. So, you may need to find different software depending on what you use.
Website Coding and Uploading
-
CotEditor: for editing code.
CotEditor is a nice code editor that I came across while setting up my new laptop. One thing I like about it is being able to choose exactaly how syntax highlighting works. You can choose all of your custom settings, and make your own elements. Which is great, since I have a very *unique* coding style :P
and.. it's open source! :)
-
Xcode: for more than just websites.
Before I found CotEditor, I used Xcode all the time. It's a great alternative if you develop other things for the Apple ecosystem.
-
Mountain Duck: for all your file needs.
Mountain Duck is the best app to mount your server or cloud storage. Anything else that I tried was either super slow or kept crashing my laptop. This is a paid app for Mac and Windows, however they do offer a free version that is just an app, and doesnt use Finder.
Psst.. you can use this with Neocities!~
-
Neocities CLI: for websites Neocities style.
Before the self hosted days, it was me and the Neocities CLI. It's great when I need to mass-upload files on my site. It's free, and there are zero-to-no problems that I have with it. One issue I find annoying is if you upload too much within a day, every single Neocities site just goes POOF for a couple hours, so make sure you don't upload too much.
